Extensive public education regarding the environmental concerns
in Shawnee State Forest via news releases, guest commentaries
in local newspapers, radio show, rally, interviews, press conferences,
meetings with elected officials, tabling and more.
• Voices collaborated
with a State Senator to successfully stop the public from being
assessed a parking fee to use their state parks. The Voices provided
public testimony at the Ohio Historical Center adamantly opposing
these fees. |
• Collected
nearly 3,000 signatures, including those of several environmental
scientists, asking for the cessation of the clearcutting in Shawnee
and all other Ohio state forests.
• Along with
the Ohio Environmental Council and the Buckeye Forest Council,
the Voices for the Forest testified before the Senate Natural
Resource and Environment Committee opposing S.B. 193. This bill
proposed to increase the timbering in all state forests including
the Shawnee and open up Ohio's state parks, nature preserves,
and forests to gas and oil drilling. After the testimony, the
timbering aspect was removed from this bill. Eventually, S.B.
193 was defeated. |
